Services for Parents and Families



Alexander County Partnership for Children provides support for parents and families in Alexander County.

Early Intervention Awareness and Outreach seeks to assist parents with referrals for children with potential delays or in need of special services.

Child Passenger Safety Seat Program is funded by the United Way of Alexander County and Buckle Up Kids.  Car seats are evaluated for appropriateness, safety, and proper installation.  The activity also provides parents with a hands-on educational session to ensure that the knowledge and skill of the parent is increased to effectively secure the car seat within the vehicle themselves. ACPC staff are certified Child Passenger Safety Seat Technicians.  Car seat inspections are made by appointment. more info>>>

Child Care Resource and Referral (CCR&R) links parents to quality regulated child care while providing families with information and materials about other community resources. Parent Sessions are offered on a regular basis to equip parents with the tools needed to prepare their child for entering school. Subsidy helps parents pay for child care so they can work or attend school, provides information to parents about how to choose a safe, quality child care arrangements.

Nurturing Program is an intensive 16 week parent education program for parents of children 0-5. The format includes direct instruction, discussion, videos, and group work led by the parent facilitator, in addition to home visits conducted by the parent facilitator. This program helps adults learn to parent with empathy and positive discipline.

Community Outreach sponsors family fun days filled with valuable resources for parents; makes public presentations to civic groups, businesses, and the day care association; and holds community needs assessments. This program raises the community’s awareness and support of Smart Start and the partnership’s current activities.

More at Four (MAF) is a state funded community based pre-kindergarten program that works to provide high-quality educational experiences as a means to enhance school readiness for four year olds who have not previously received quality care. Alexander County’s MAF sites are located at LuLu's Child Enrichment Center, First Baptist Church Child Development Center, Alexander County Head Start, and Salem Sloan Child Enrichment Center.

Play to Learn is a FREE playgroup for parents and their preschoolers, three four and five year olds as well as younger siblings. Activities are based on the Creative Curriculum for the children and help parents/caregivers by providing age appropriate adult/child interactions through play. Information on child development, community resources and ideas for activities to be shared at home are provided to participants

The Play to Learn Program uses several ways to reach children and enrich their learning experiences. The program provides an enriched, developmentally appropriate learning environment with materials and activities to assist in the development of physical, cognitive and social skills for developing children.

The Play to Learn Program meets at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, 31 Pleasant Hill Church Road, Taylorsville. Sessions are held throughout the school year and meet one time a week on Wednesdays from 10am to Noon. Other Play to Learn sites will be added during the year. Terrific Tuesdays and Thursdays: The Fantastic Families Room at the Partnership for Children is the site for Terrific Tuesdays and Thursdays. Children and their parents are invited to gather each week. This room is designed with the parent and the preschool child in mind. Children can play independently or play together with educational toys that are rotated on a weekly basis. Hours of operation for the Fantastic Families Roomare Tuesdays and Thursdays 9:30 to 11:30. Parents and children are invited to drop in for a few minutes or stay the entire time. Children birth to five and their family are welcome! Alexander County Partnership for Children in collaboration with Alexander County Schools is the recipient of a Ready Schools grant for the 09-10 fiscal year. NC defines a ready elementary school as providing an inviting atmosphere that values and respects all children and their families, and is a place where children succeed. It is committed to high quality in all domains of learning and teaching and has deep connections with parents and its community. It prepares children for success in work and life in the 21st century.

The Alexander County Ready Schools Committee composed of school representatives, community leaders, child care directors, and Partnership for Children staff is working with local elementary schools to help prepare children for success in school. Ready Schools activities to date include a Pre-K Roundup for children entering kindergarten next school year along with a birth to four screening to assist in identifying children who have may have potential delays so that they may receive services prior to kindergarten.
